Philips Hue Scenes: Setting the Perfect Ambiance for Every Occasion

Whether you’re hosting a dinner party, watching a movie, or just want to relax after a long day, the perfect lighting can make all the difference. With Philips Hue’s scenes feature, you can easily set the mood for any occasion with just a few taps on your smartphone. Here’s how to get started.

Getting Started with Philips Hue Scenes

Before you can start creating scenes, you’ll need to have a Philips Hue Bridge and at least one Philips Hue light bulb installed. If you haven’t set up your Philips Hue system yet, check out our guide to get started.

Once you have your Philips Hue system up and running, download the Philips Hue app on your iOS or Android device. Then, open the app and tap on the “Scenes” tab at the bottom of the screen.

On the Scenes screen, you’ll see a list of pre-set scenes that you can use as-is or customize to your liking. To use one of these scenes, simply tap on it and then tap on the “Activate” button. Your Philips Hue lights will instantly change to match the scene.

Creating a New Scene

If you want to create a completely custom scene, tap on the “+” button in the top-right corner of the Scenes screen. On the next screen, give your scene a name and tap on the “Add photo” button to choose a photo to use as the scene’s thumbnail.

Then, use the slider at the bottom of the screen to adjust the overall brightness of the scene. When you’re happy with the brightness, tap on the “Done” button in the top-right corner of the screen.

Next, you’ll need to select which lights you want to include in the scene. By default, all of the lights in your Philips Hue system will be selected. If you only want to use certain lights, tap on the “Lights” button and then uncheck the lights that you don’t want to use.

Once you’ve selected the lights you want to use, it’s time to start customizing the scene. To do this, tap on the lightbulb icon next to each light. On the next screen, you can adjust the light’s color, brightness, and saturation. You can also tap on the “Effects” button to add special effects like strobe or color loop.

When you’re happy with the settings for each light, tap on the “Done” button in the top-right corner of the screen. Then, tap on the “Save” button in the top-right corner to save your scene.

Editing and Deleting Scenes

To edit a scene that you’ve already created, tap on the “Edit” button in the top-right corner of the scene’s thumbnail. From here, you can change the name, photo, and overall brightness of the scene. You can also add or remove lights, and adjust the settings for each light.

When you’re finished making changes, tap on the “Save” button in the top-right corner.

To delete a scene, tap on the “Edit” button and then scroll to the bottom of the screen and tap on the “Delete scene” button. On the next screen, tap on the “Delete” button to confirm.

Using Scenes with Routines

In addition to manually activating scenes, you can also set them to activate automatically as part of a Philips Hue routine. To do this, open the Philips Hue app and tap on the “Routines” tab at the bottom of the screen.

On the Routines screen, tap on the “+” button in the top-right corner. On the next screen, give your routine a name and tap on the “Scene” button. Then, select the scene that you want to use and tap on the “Done” button.

Next, you’ll need to set a trigger for the routine. The trigger is the event that will cause the routine to start. For example, you can set the routine to start when you arrive home, when you wake up, or at a specific time of day. To do this, tap on the “Trigger” button and then select the trigger that you want to use.

Finally, tap on the “Save” button in the top-right corner.

Adding Scenes to Your Favorites

If you have a scene that you use often, you can add it to your Favorites for quick and easy access. To do this, open the Philips Hue app and tap on the “Scenes” tab. Then, find the scene that you want to add to your Favorites and tap on the “Favorite” button in the top-right corner of the scene’s thumbnail.

The scene will now be added to your Favorites, which you can access by tapping on the “Favorites” tab at the bottom of the screen.

Creating Groups for Multiple Scenes

If you have a lot of scenes, you can organize them into groups to keep things tidy. To create a group, open the Philips Hue app and tap on the “Scenes” tab. Then, tap on the “+” button in the top-right corner and select the “Group” option.

On the next screen, give your group a name and tap on the “Add scenes” button. Then, select the scenes that you want to add to the group and tap on the “Done” button.

Finally, tap on the “Save” button in the top-right corner.

Now, when you activate the group, all of the scenes in the group will be activated at the same time. This is a great way to create complex lighting setups with just a few taps.

Controlling Scenes with Your Voice

If you have a voice assistant like the Amazon Echo or Google Home, you can use voice commands to control your Philips Hue scenes. For example, you can say “Alexa, turn on the Relax scene” or “Hey Google, turn on the Movie scene.”

To set this up, open the Philips Hue app and tap on the “Settings” tab. Then, tap on “Works with Amazon Alexa” or “Works with Google” and follow the on-screen instructions to link your account.

Once you’ve linked your account, you’ll be able to control your Philips Hue scenes with your voice. You can also set up routines so that your scenes are activated automatically based on certain triggers, like your location or the time of day.

Conclusion

Philips Hue’s scenes feature is a great way to set the mood for any occasion. With just a few taps on your smartphone, you can easily create custom lighting setups that are perfect for any situation. You can also use scenes with routines to automate your lighting and voice assistants to control your scenes with your voice.
