Overview
Siri Suggestions in Mac OS Mojave are personalized recommendations that appear in the Spotlight and Safari search fields. Siri Suggestions learn from your usage patterns and suggest frequently visited websites, recently opened documents, and more. Siri Suggestions can help you be more productive and efficient with your Mac.
Enabling Siri Suggestions
By default, Siri Suggestions are turned on in Mac OS Mojave. If you have disabled Siri Suggestions in the past, you can re-enable them by following these steps:
- Open System Preferences.
- Click on Siri.
- Ensure that the
Siri Suggestions & Shortcuts
checkbox is checked.
Siri Suggestions in the Spotlight
Siri Suggestions appear in the Spotlight search field when you click on the magnifying glass icon in the upper right corner of the screen. The suggestions are based on your usage patterns and include frequently visited websites, recently opened documents, and more. You can also click on the Show More
link to view more Siri Suggestions.
Siri Suggestions in Safari
Siri Suggestions also appear in the Safari search field when you start typing in a web address. The suggestions are based on your browsing history and include frequently visited websites, recently visited websites, and more. You can also click on the Show More
link to view more Siri Suggestions.
Disabling Siri Suggestions
If you no longer want to see Siri Suggestions, you can disable them by following these steps:
- Open System Preferences.
- Click on Siri.
- Uncheck the
Siri Suggestions & Shortcuts
checkbox.
Assuming you have a Mac running Mojave (10.14), here’s how to take advantage of Siri Suggestions:
First, open System Preferences and click on Siri. Make sure the Enable Siri checkbox is checked, then click on the Siri Suggestions & Privacy… button.
In the next window, make sure the following options are enabled:
– Show Siri Suggestions in Search
– Show Siri Suggestions in Look Up
– Show Siri Suggestions in QuickType
Now, open Finder and click on the magnifying glass icon in the menu bar. You should see a list of Siri Suggestions appear in the drop-down menu, including recently used apps, documents, and webpages.
You can also access Siri Suggestions by clicking on the Siri icon in the menu bar, or by using the keyboard shortcut Option+Spacebar.
If you want to see more Siri Suggestions, click on the Show More link at the bottom of the drop-down menu. This will open a new Finder window with a list of Siri Suggestions organized by category.
Finally, Siri Suggestions can also be accessed from within apps. For example, if you’re using the Safari app and you start typing in the search bar, you’ll see a list of Siri Suggestions appear below the search bar.
That’s all there is to using Siri Suggestions in Mac OS Mojave. With this feature, you can quickly and easily find the apps, documents, and webpages you’re looking for without having to search through your hard drive or remember complex URLs.
In the Siri Suggestions & Privacy section of System Preferences, you can choose whether to allow Siri to learn from your usage of Safari, News, Mail, Messages, Contacts, Calendar, Reminders, Notes, Stocks, Voice Memos, and Safari Reading List. This is a global setting, so you don’t need to individually enable or disable each app. If you turn off Siri Suggestions & Privacy, Siri won’t make any suggestions and won’t retain any of your Siri information.
If you allow Siri to learn from your usage of the above apps, it can provide you with personalized suggestions in the Today view, in Spotlight, and when you use Siri. For example, Siri can suggest a website to visit in Safari based on websites you’ve visited in the past, or suggest a message to send to a friend based on conversations you’ve had with that friend in Messages.
To see Siri’s suggestions, click the Siri icon in the menu bar, or press and hold the Command (⌘) key and Space bar on your keyboard. The Siri window shows Siri’s suggestions for websites to visit, people to contact, reminders to create, and more.
If you don’t want Siri to suggest a particular item, you can remove it from Siri’s suggestions by clicking the X next to the item. Siri will then stop suggesting that item.
You can also turn off Siri Suggestions & Privacy for individual apps. To do this, open the Siri Suggestions & Privacy section of System Preferences, then deselect the checkboxes next to the apps you don’t want Siri to learn from.
Siri Suggestions are a great way to get personalized recommendations from Siri, but if you’re not comfortable with Siri learning from your usage, you can always turn off Siri Suggestions & Privacy.
You can also use Siri Suggestions with third-party apps. For example, you can ask Siri to show you photos from a particular trip or event. Siri will then use its intelligence to find and display the relevant photos in the Photos app.
To do this, just invoke Siri as usual and say something like “Show me photos from my trip to Paris”. Siri will then open the Photos app and display all the photos it thinks are relevant. You can also ask Siri to show you specific types of photos, such as “Show me all the photos I took of the Eiffel Tower”.
If you’re using an app that Siri Suggestions doesn’t work with, you can still ask Siri to open the app for you. For example, you can say “Open the Twitter app” or “Open the Safari app”. Siri will then open the relevant app for you.
Siri Suggestions is a great way to get more out of your Mac. With its help, you can quickly find the files, apps, and information you need. So be sure to take advantage of it in Mac OS Mojave.
