The first thing you need to do is open Adobe Photoshop on your computer. Then, create a new document by going to File > New. A new window will pop up. In this window, you will need to set the width and height of your document, as well as the resolution. For the purposes of this tutorial, we will be using a resolution of 72 pixels/inch.
Once you have set the width, height, and resolution of your document, click on the “Create” button. This will bring you to your new document.
Now that you are in your new document, it is time to learn about the different parts of the Pen Tool. The first part is the “Pen” which is used to draw shapes. To begin, let’s select the Pen Tool from the Tools palette.

Before we start drawing our custom shape, let’s set our Foreground color to black. We can do this by clicking on the Foreground color swatch in the Tools palette.
Step 3: Begin Drawing Your Shape
Now that we have our Pen Tool and Foreground color set, we’re ready to begin drawing our custom shape. We’ll start by clicking somewhere on the canvas to create our first anchor point.
Step 4: Create Additional Anchor Points
To create additional anchor points, simply click somewhere else on the canvas. As you can see in the image below, each time we click, we create a new anchor point.
Step 5: Connect The Anchor Points
To connect the anchor points and complete our custom shape, we’ll need to click on the first anchor point we created. Doing so will create a path between all of the anchor points, and our custom shape will be complete!
Creating Curved Paths
Now that we know how to create a basic custom shape, let’s learn how to create curved paths. Curved paths are essential for creating more complex shapes and illustrations.
Step 1: Select The Pen Tool
As before, we’ll start by selecting the Pen Tool from the Tools palette.
Step 2: Set Your Foreground Color
Next, let’s set our Foreground color to black. We can do this by clicking on the Foreground color swatch in the Tools palette.

To complete the path, simply click on the first anchor point we created. Doing so will create a path between all of the anchor points, and our curved path will be complete!
Working With Bezier Curves
In addition to creating straight paths and curved paths, we can also create paths with Bezier curves. Bezier curves are a bit more advanced, but they’re essential for creating truly complex shapes and illustrations.
Step 1: Select The Pen Tool
Once again, we’ll start by selecting the Pen Tool from the Tools palette.
Step 2: Set Your Foreground Color
Next, we’ll set our Foreground color to black. We can do this by clicking on the Foreground color swatch in the Tools palette.
