How to Use the Messages App in Mac OS Mojave

Overview

The Messages app in Mac OS Mojave allows you to communicate with anyone else using the Messages app on their Mac, iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. The app also supports sending and receiving traditional SMS text messages on your Mac, as long as your iPhone is nearby and connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

Starting a New Conversation

To start a new conversation, simply open the Messages app and click on the “New Message” button in the upper-right corner of the window. Then, type the name, phone number, or email address of the person you want to message into the “To:” field. If the person you’re messaging is in your Contacts app, you can also start typing their name and then select them from the drop-down menu that appears.

Sending an iMessage

If you’re messaging someone with an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, you’ll see a blue bubble next to their name. This means that you’re sending them an iMessage. iMessages are free to send and can be sent over Wi-Fi or cellular data.

Sending an SMS Text Message

If you’re messaging someone with a phone that doesn’t support iMessage, you’ll see a green bubble next to their name. This means that you’re sending them an SMS text message. SMS text messages are not free to send and will be charged to your cellular plan.

Attaching Files

You can attach any type of file to an iMessage or SMS text message. To do so, click on the “A” icon in the upper-right corner of the message window. Then, select the file you want to attach.

Sending a Photo or Video

You can also send photos and videos through the Messages app. To do so, click on the “Camera” icon in the upper-right corner of the message window. Then, select the photo or video you want to send.

Using Emoji

Emoji are small icons that you can use to express yourself in a message. To use emoji, click on the ” Globe ” icon in the lower-left corner of the message window. Then, select the emoji you want to use.

Using Memoji

Memoji are customizable, personal emoji that you can create to look like yourself. To use Memoji, click on the ” Globe ” icon in the lower-left corner of the message window. Then, select the ” Memoji ” option.

Using Animoji

Animoji are animated emoji that you can use to express yourself in a message. To use Animoji, click on the ” Globe ” icon in the lower-left corner of the message window. Then, select the ” Animoji ” option.

Checking Your Message History

The Messages app keeps a history of all the messages you’ve sent and received. To view your message history, click on the ” Messages ” button in the upper-left corner of the Messages app window. Then, select the ” History ” option.

Searching Your Message History

You can also search your message history to find a specific message. To do so, click on the ” Messages ” button in the upper-left corner of the Messages app window. Then, click on the ” Search ” field in the upper-right corner of the window and type in the text you’re looking for.

Deleting a Message

You can delete any message you’ve sent or received in the Messages app. To do so, right-click on the message you want to delete and select the ” Delete ” option.

Hiding a Message

You can also hide a message from your message history. To do so, right-click on the message you want to hide and select the ” Hide ” option.

Leaving a Conversation

If you want to stop messaging someone, you can leave the conversation. To do so, click on the ” Details ” button in the upper-right corner of the message window. Then, scroll down and click on the ” Leave Conversation ” button.

The Messages app in Mac OS Mojave is a great way to keep in touch with friends and family. Here’s how to use it:

To start a new conversation, click the New Message button in the upper-right corner of the window.

In the To field, start typing the name of the person you want to message. The app will autocomplete the name for you.

You can also add more than one person to the conversation by clicking the + button.

To add an emoji to your message, click the smiley face button.

To add an attachment, click the paperclip button.

When you’re done, click the Send button.

If you want to see a list of all your conversations, click the Conversations button in the upper-left corner of the window.

To search your conversations, click the magnifying glass button in the upper-right corner of the window and type what you’re looking for.

To see your messages in chronological order, click the Sort button in the upper-right corner of the window and select Oldest First.

You can also customize the way your messages are displayed by clicking the View button in the upper-right corner of the window and selecting a different view.

To delete a conversation, click the Conversations button in the upper-left corner of the window, hover your mouse over the conversation you want to delete, and click the trash can icon.

If you want to start a new conversation, click the New Message button in the upper-right corner of the Messages app window. A new message window opens. Type the name of the person you want to message in the To field, or click the + button to open your Contacts app and choose a name from there. If the person you want to message isn’t in your Contacts app, you can type their email address in the To field.

In the message field, type what you want to say, and then click the Send button.

If you want to add an emoji to your message, click the smiley face button to the left of the message field. A menu of emoji opens. Click the emoji you want to use, and it’s added to your message.

If you want to add a photo, video, or other attachment to your message, click the down arrow button to the right of the message field. A menu opens, showing the types of files you can attach. Click the type of file you want to attach, and then browse to and select the file you want to attach. The file is added to your message.

If you want to add your current location to your message, click the Details button to the right of the message field. A menu opens, showing the location options. Click the Send My Current Location option. Your current location is added to the message.

If you want to see the details of a message, such as when it was sent and whether it was read, click the Details button to the right of the message field. A menu opens, showing the message details.
