Enabling Voice Control

Voice Control is a new accessibility feature in iOS 14 that lets you control your iPhone entirely with your voice. This feature is designed for people with physical or motor disabilities that prevent them from using traditional input methods, but it can also be useful for anyone who wants a hands-free way to use their iPhone.

To enable Voice Control, go to the Settings app and select Accessibility from the list of options. Scroll down to the Interaction section and select Voice Control. On the next screen, toggle the Voice Control switch to the On position.

Using Voice Control

Once Voice Control is enabled, you can start using it immediately by saying “Hey Siri, turn on Voice Control.” You can also use the Accessibility Shortcut ( triple-click the Side button by default) to turn Voice Control on or off.

When Voice Control is turned on, you’ll see a new interface on your screen with a grid of icons. Each icon represents a different action or app. To select an icon, say “Select” followed by the name or number of the icon. For example, to open the Camera app, you would say “Select Camera.”

You can also use voice commands to perform actions within apps. For example, you can say “Take a photo” to take a picture in the Camera app, or “Start a new paragraph” to create a new paragraph in the Notes app. The voice commands available to you will vary depending on the app you’re using.

To see a list of all the voice commands available to you in a particular app, say “Show Commands.” You can also say “Help” at any time to get a list of available commands.

Configuring Voice Control

There are a few different ways to configure Voice Control to suit your needs. To change the language that Voice Control uses, go to the Settings app and select Accessibility. Scroll down to the Voice Control section and select Language. On the next screen, select the language you want to use from the list.

You can also change the Voice Feedback setting to control how much spoken feedback you hear when using Voice Control. To do this, go to the Settings app and select Accessibility. Scroll down to the Voice Control section and select Voice Feedback. On the next screen, you can choose to have Voice Control speak commands, speak responses, or both.

Finally, you can change the Input Mode to control how Voice Control recognizes your spoken commands. To do this, go to the Settings app and select Accessibility. Scroll down to the Voice Control section and select Input Mode. On the next screen, you can choose between Freeform and Directed input mode.

Freeform input mode is designed for casual use and lets you use any words you want when talking to Voice Control. Directed input mode is designed for more precise use and requires you to use specific commands and vocabulary. You can learn more about the different input modes in the Voice Control User Guide.
