How to Customize and Use Keyboard Shortcuts in Mac OS Mojave

Posted on 18th June 2023

As a power user, you know that keyboard shortcuts can boost your productivity by leaps and bounds. And with MacOS Mojave, Apple has made it easier than ever to customize and use keyboard shortcuts. Here’s how.

Finding and Customizing Keyboard Shortcuts

To find all of the available keyboard shortcuts, go to System Preferences > Keyboard > Shortcuts. Here, you’ll see a list of all the shortcuts, organized by app. To add or remove a keyboard shortcut, simply click on the shortcut and press the keys you want to use.

If you want to use a keyboard shortcut that’s not listed, you can create a custom shortcut by clicking on the + button at the bottom of the window. You’ll need to enter the name of the shortcut, the exact keys you want to use, and the action you want the shortcut to perform.

Using Keyboard Shortcuts

Once you’ve customized your keyboard shortcuts, you can start using them right away. To do so, simply press the keys you’ve assigned to the shortcut. For example, if you’ve created a shortcut for Finder, you can use it by pressing Command + F. If you want to use a keyboard shortcut that’s not listed in System Preferences, you can do so by holding down the Command key and pressing the keys you’ve assigned to the shortcut.

Conclusion

By customizing and using keyboard shortcuts, you can boost your productivity and get things done faster. So if you’re not already using them, be sure to give them a try.

In System Preferences, click Keyboard, then click Shortcuts. Select App Shortcuts from the list on the left. Click the + button to add a new shortcut.

A new window will open. In the Application field, select the app you want to create a shortcut for. In the Menu Title field, type the exact name of the menu command you want to create a shortcut for. For example, if you want to create a shortcut for the Save command in the Pages app, you would type “Save” (without the quotation marks) in the Menu Title field.

In the Keyboard Shortcut field, type the keyboard shortcut you want to use for the command. For example, if you wanted to use the shortcut Option-Command-S for the Save command, you would type that shortcut in the Keyboard Shortcut field.

Click Add, then close the Keyboard Preferences window.

The shortcut you created should now be working in the app you selected. If it’s not working, make sure you typed the shortcut correctly in the Keyboard Shortcut field, and that you’re using the correct app. You can also try restarting your computer to see if that fixes the problem.
