A clipping mask is a layer in Adobe Photoshop that is used to mask out an image so that only certain parts of the image are visible. The clipping mask is created by using the “Create Clipping Mask” tool, which is located in the “Layer” menu.

To create a clipping mask, first select the layer that you want to use as the mask. Then, go to the “Layer” menu and select “Create Clipping Mask.” The layer that you selected will now be the clipping mask.

You can also create a clipping mask by selecting the layer that you want to use as the mask and then pressing the “Ctrl” and “Alt” keys at the same time. This will create a clipping mask on the layer that is currently selected.

When you create a clipping mask, only the pixels in the layer that you selected will be visible. The rest of the image will be hidden. This can be useful if you want to create an image that has a transparent background.

To edit a clipping mask, double-click on the layer in the “Layers” panel. This will open the “Layer” menu. From here, you can change the layer that is being used as the clipping mask, as well as the opacity of the layer.

If you want to delete a clipping mask, simply select the layer in the “Layers” panel and press the “Delete” key on your keyboard.

In Adobe Photoshop, a clipping mask is an easy way to create a layered effect by using a top layer to mask the layers below it. Clipping masks are commonly used to create photo collages, to isolate a particular element in a design, or to fade an image into the background.

In this tutorial, we’ll show you how to create a clipping mask in Photoshop. We’ll be using two images: a photo of a cityscape and a photo of a person. By clipping the person into the cityscape, we’ll create the illusion that the person is standing in front of the cityscape.

Here’s what our final image will look like:

Step 1: Open Your Images in Photoshop

First, open the cityscape image and the person image in Photoshop. You can do this by going to File > Open, or by pressing Ctrl+O (PC) / Command+O (Mac).

Step 2: Place the Person Image on Top of the Cityscape Image

Next, we need to place the person image on top of the cityscape image. To do this, drag the person image from the Photoshop window onto the cityscape image.

You should now have two layers in your Photoshop document, with the person image on top:

Step 3: Select the Top Layer

With the top layer selected, go up to the Layer menu at the top of the screen and choose Create Clipping Mask:

This will instantly clip the person image into the cityscape image, giving the illusion that the person is standing in front of the cityscape:

Step 4: Add a Mask to the Top Layer

Next, we’ll add a mask to the top layer. This will allow us to fine-tune the edges of the clipping mask, and to blend the person image into the cityscape more smoothly.

With the top layer selected, click on the Add Layer Mask icon at the bottom of the Layers panel:

This will add a white layer mask thumbnail to the top layer.

Step 5: Paint Black on the Layer Mask

With the layer mask thumbnail selected, grab a soft, round black brush from the Brush tool in the Toolbar. Then, paint over the areas of the image where you want to hide the person image and reveal the cityscape below.

As you paint, keep an eye on the layer mask thumbnail. You’ll see the black areas appearing on the layer mask thumbnail as you paint them:

Step 6: Paint White on the Layer Mask

If you make a mistake and paint over an area you didn’t mean to, simply switch your brush color from black to white. Then, paint back over the mistake. This will remove the black paint from that area and reveal the person image again:

Step 7: Reduce the Opacity of the Top Layer

To blend the person image into the background more smoothly, go up to the Opacity option at the top of the Layers panel and lower the opacity percentage until you’re happy with the result:

And there we have it! That’s how to create a clipping mask in Photoshop.

A clipping mask is an easy way to create interesting photo collages and montages in Adobe Photoshop. With a clipping mask, you can use the shape of one layer to mask the content of another layer. Clipping masks are especially useful for images because you can easily change the shape of the mask to create different effects.

To create a clipping mask, you need two layers: a layer with the content that you want to mask, and a layer with the shape that you want to use as the mask. The content layer is usually the top layer, and the shape layer is usually the bottom layer.

To create a clipping mask, first select the layer that you want to use as the mask. Then, go to Layer > Create Clipping Mask. This will clip the content of the top layer to the shape of the bottom layer.

You can also use the keyboard shortcut Cmd+Opt+G (Mac) or Ctrl+Alt+G (Windows) to create a clipping mask.

If you want to invert the clipping mask, so that the shape is masked and the content is revealed, go to Layer > Clipping Mask > Invert.
