How to Configure DHCP in Windows Server 2022

Posted on 19th June 2023

Introduction

DHCP, or Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol, is a network protocol that allows devices on a network to request and be assigned IP addresses and other configuration settings.

In order to configure DHCP in Windows Server 2022, you will need to open the Server Manager and select the “Add Roles and Features” option. From here, you will select “Role-based or feature-based installation” and then select the server on which you want to install DHCP. Next, you will select the “DHCP Server” role and then click “Next” to continue. Finally, you will click “Install” to complete the installation process.

Configuring DHCP

Once DHCP is installed, you will need to open the DHCP console in order to configure the settings. In the console, you will need to right-click on the “IPv4” node and select “New Scope” from the menu. Next, you will need to give the scope a name and description. After this, you will need to select the “Add” button in order to add the IP address range for the scope.

Once the IP address range has been added, you will need to select the “Next” button. On the next page, you will need to configure the scope options. The options that you will need to configure will depend on your network, but some of the more common options that you will need to set are the default gateway, DNS servers, and WINS servers. After you have configured the scope options, you will need to select the “Finish” button to complete the process.

Enabling DHCP

In order for DHCP to start assigning IP addresses to devices on the network, you will need to enable the service. To do this, you will need to open the “Services” snap-in and locate the “DHCP Server” service. Once you have found the service, you will need to right-click on it and select “Properties” from the menu. In the “Properties” window, you will need to set the “Startup type” to “Automatic” and then click on the “Start” button to start the service.

Adding DHCP Reservation

If you want to assign a specific IP address to a device on the network, you will need to add a DHCP reservation. To do this, you will need to open the DHCP console and expand the “Scope” that you want to add the reservation to. Next, you will need to right-click on the “Reservations” node and select “New Reservation” from the menu.

In the “New Reservation” window, you will need to enter the reservation name, description, MAC address, and IP address. After this, you will need to select the “Add” button to add the reservation. Once the reservation has been added, you will need to select the “OK” button to close the window.

Conclusion

In this article, we have shown you how to configure DHCP in Windows Server 2022. We have also shown you how to add a DHCP reservation.

DHCP, or Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol, is a network protocol used to automatically assign IP addresses and other network settings to devices connected to a network. DHCP is supported by most routers and is the recommended way to set up a home or small office network.

In Windows Server 2022, DHCP is managed through the DHCP console, which can be accessed through the Server Manager console. To open the DHCP console, click on Tools > DHCP.

The DHCP console will show a list of all the DHCP servers on the network. To add a new DHCP server, right-click on the list of servers and select Add DHCP Server.

The Add DHCP Server Wizard will guide you through the process of adding a new DHCP server. On the first page of the wizard, you will need to select the server you want to install DHCP on.

On the next page, you will need to select the network adapter that will be used for DHCP. If you have multiple adapters, you can select more than one.

On the next page, you will need to select the type of network that the DHCP server will be used on. The most common types are IPv4 and IPv6.

On the next page, you will need to specify the address range that the DHCP server will use. The address range must be a valid range for the selected network type.

On the next page, you will need to specify the length of the lease. The lease is the amount of time that a DHCP-assigned IP address can be used before it must be renewed.

On the next page, you will need to specify the gateway address. The gateway is the address of the router that will be used to connect to the Internet.

On the next page, you will need to specify the DNS server address. The DNS server is used to resolve domain names to IP addresses.

On the next page, you will need to specify the WINS server address. The WINS server is used to resolve NetBIOS names to IP addresses.

On the next page, you will need to specify the DHCP options that you want to use. DHCP options are optional settings that can be used to configure DHCP clients.

On the next page, you will need to review the settings and then click Finish to complete the wizard.

After the wizard has been completed, the new DHCP server will be added to the list of DHCP servers.

Next, we’ll need to open the DHCP console. This can be done by going to Start > Administrative Tools > DHCP.

Once the DHCP console is open, right-click on the server name and select “Add/Remove Authorized DHCP Server”.

In the next window, select the “Add” button.

This will open the “Add Authorized DHCP Server” window. Select the ” DHCP server ” checkbox and then click “OK”.

Now that the DHCP server is authorized, we need to add the scope. A scope is a range of IP addresses that will be assigned to clients by the DHCP server.

To add a scope, right-click on the server name and select “New Scope”.

This will open the “New Scope Wizard”. Click “Next” to continue.

On the “Scope Name” page, enter a name for the scope. This can be anything you want.

On the “Scope Type” page, select the ” DHCP ” checkbox. Click “Next” to continue.

On the “IP Address Range” page, enter the range of IP addresses that you want to be assigned to clients. Click “Next” to continue.

On the “Add Exclusions” page, you can add any IP addresses that you don’t want to be assigned to clients. For our example, we’ll just add the IP address of the DHCP server. Click “Next” to continue.

On the “Configure DHCP Options” page, you can configure DHCP options. These options are optional, but can be used to provide additional information to clients, such as the IP address of the DNS server or the default gateway.

For our example, we’ll just leave the options at their default values. Click “Next” to continue.

On the “Configure DHCP Naming” page, you can configure the DHCP server to use a specific domain name. This is optional, but can be useful if you want clients to be able to access resources by hostname.

For our example, we’ll just leave the option at its default value. Click “Next” to continue.

On the “Authorize DHCP Server” page, select the “Authorize this DHCP server in Active Directory Domain Services” checkbox. This will allow the DHCP server to dynamically update DNS records. Click “Next” to continue.

On the “Completing the New Scope Wizard” page, review the settings and then click “Finish” to create the scope.

Now that the scope has been created, we need to activate it. To do this, right-click on the scope and select “Activate”.

The scope is now active and clients will be able to receive IP addresses from the DHCP server.
