The Text Frame Tool is one of the most versatile and powerful tools in Affinity Designer. It can be used to create text frames of any size and shape, and to flow text within those frames. In this tutorial, we’ll take a look at how to use the Text Frame Tool to create and format text frames and flow text within them.

Creating Text Frames

To create a text frame, simply click and drag with the Text Frame Tool. By default, the text frame will be created as a rectangular shape, but you can also hold down the Shift key to constrain the frame to a square, or the Alt (Option) key to create an oval text frame.

If you want to create a text frame with a specific width and height, you can enter those values in the Width and Height fields in the Tool Options bar.

Flowing Text into Text Frames

Once you’ve created a text frame, you can flow text into it from another text frame or from a text file. To flow text into a text frame, simply click and drag with the Text Frame Tool from the source text frame or file to the destination text frame.

If you want to flow text into a text frame from a file, you can click the “Choose File” button in the Tool Options bar, or you can drag and drop the file into the document window.

Formatting Text Frames

Once you’ve created and flowed text into a text frame, you can format the text as you would with any other text object. You can change the font, font size, color, alignment, and so on.

To format the text in a text frame, simply select the frame with the Text Frame Tool and then use the options in the Text Formatting toolbar to format the text.

Resizing Text Frames

Text frames can be resized just like any other object in Affinity Designer. To resize a text frame, simply select it with the Text Frame Tool and then click and drag one of the handles.

If you want to resize the text frame to a specific width and height, you can enter those values in the Width and Height fields in the Tool Options bar.

Text frames can also be rotated just like any other object in Affinity Designer. To rotate a text frame, simply select it with the Text Frame Tool and then click and drag the rotation handle.

If you want to rotate the text frame to a specific angle, you can enter that value in the Angle field in the Tool Options bar.

Wrapping Text around Objects

The text will flow around the object, and you can adjust the spacing between the object and the text by clicking and dragging the “Wrap Offset” handle.

Converting Text Frames to Other Objects

Text frames can be converted to other objects, such as shapes, paths, or curves. To convert a text frame to another object, simply select the text frame with the Text Frame Tool and then click the “Convert to Shape” button in the Tool Options bar.

You can also convert a text frame to a path or a curve by clicking the “Convert to Path” or “Convert to Curve” button in the Tool Options bar.
