How to Create a Vignette Effect in Affinity Photo

Posted on 18th June 2023

Create a New Layer

To create a vignette effect, first create a new layer. To do this, go to the Layer menu at the top of the screen and select New Layer from the drop-down menu. A new layer will appear in the Layers panel.

Fill the Layer with Black

Next, fill the new layer with black. To do this, go to the Edit menu and select Fill from the drop-down menu. In the Fill dialogue box, select the Color option and then click on the black color swatch. Finally, click the OK button to close the dialogue box.

Change the Layer Blending Mode

Now, change the layer blending mode to Multiply. To do this, go to the Layer menu and select Blending Mode from the drop-down menu. Then, select Multiply from the list of blending modes. The vignette effect will now be visible.

Adjust the Layer Opacity

If the vignette effect is too strong, you can adjust the layer opacity to reduce its intensity. To do this, go to the Layer menu and select Opacity from the drop-down menu. Then, use the slider to adjust the layer opacity until you’re happy with the effect.

Add a Mask

If you want to further customize the vignette effect, you can add a mask to the layer. To do this, go to the Layer menu and select Add Mask from the drop-down menu. A mask will be added to the layer, which you can then use to paint over areas of the image that you don’t want to be affected by the vignette effect.

Conclusion

That’s how to create a vignette effect in Affinity Photo! By creating a new layer and filling it with black, then changing the layer blending mode to Multiply, you can easily add a vignette effect to any image. You can then adjust the layer opacity and add a mask to further customize the effect.

There are two ways to create a vignette effect in Affinity Photo:

1. With the Ellipse Tool

2. With the Vignette Adjustment Layer

1. With the Ellipse Tool

Step 1

Open the image you want to add a vignette to in Affinity Photo.

Step 2

Select the Ellipse Tool from the Tools panel.

Step 3

Click and drag on the image to create an ellipse.

Step 4

With the ellipse still selected, go to the Effects menu and choose Stylize > Feather.

Step 5

Enter a value for the Size and click OK.

Step 6

Click and drag the ellipse into place.

Step 7

With the ellipse still selected, go to the Layers menu and choose Convert to Layer.

Step 8

Click the Adjustment Layer icon in the Layers panel and choose Levels from the list.

Step 9

In the Levels Adjustment Layer, drag the black slider to the right until you start to see the vignette effect.

2. With the Vignette Adjustment Layer

Step 1

Open the image you want to add a vignette to in Affinity Photo.

Step 2

Click the Adjustment Layer icon in the Layers panel and choose Vignette from the list.

Step 3

In the Vignette Adjustment Layer, drag the Amount slider to the left to increase the vignette effect.

You can also adjust the Size, Roundness, and Feather sliders to change the look of the vignette.

Step 4 – Adding the Vignette Effect

Now we come to the vignette effect.

To do this, go to the ‘Layers’ menu and select ‘New Adjustment Layer > Hue/Saturation…’.

In the ‘Hue/Saturation’ dialogue that appears, check the ‘Colorize’ box and play with the ‘Hue’, ‘Saturation’ and ‘Lightness’ sliders until you have a colour that you’re happy with. I went for a deep blue.

Click ‘OK’ when you’re done.

Next, go to the ‘Effects’ menu and select ‘Lens Correction…’.

In the ‘Lens Correction’ dialogue that appears, go to the ‘Geometry’ tab and then check the ‘Enable Perspective’ and ‘Enable Distortion’ boxes.

Now use the ‘Scale’, ‘Rotate’ and ‘Skew’ sliders to manipulate the image until the horizon is level and the buildings appear to be standing up straight.

Click ‘OK’ when you’re done.

Now go to the ‘Filters’ menu and select ‘Blur > Gaussian Blur…’.

In the ‘Gaussian Blur’ dialogue that appears, use the ‘Radius’ slider to increase the amount of blur until the image is nice and soft. I went for a radius of 10 pixels.

Click ‘OK’ when you’re done.

Finally, go to the ‘Layers’ menu and select ‘Flatten Image’.

And that’s it! You should now have a beautiful vignette effect.

Create a New Layer

To create a vignette effect, you will need to create a new layer. To do this, go to the ‘Layer’ menu at the top of the screen and select ‘New Layer’.

This will open a new dialogue box. In this box, you will need to give your layer a name. For this example, we will call it ‘Vignette Effect’.

Once you have given your layer a name, click on the ‘Create’ button. This will create a new layer in your document.

Draw a Black Rectangle

Next, you will need to draw a black rectangle on your new layer. To do this, select the ‘Rectangle’ tool from the ‘Draw’ menu.

Once you have selected the ‘Rectangle’ tool, click and drag your mouse to draw a black rectangle on your new layer.

Make sure that the rectangle is big enough to cover the entire image.

Change the Blending Mode

Once you have drawn your rectangle, you will need to change the blending mode. To do this, go to the ‘Layer’ menu and select ‘Layer Properties’.

This will open the ‘Layer Properties’ dialogue box. In this box, you will see a drop-down menu next to the word ‘Blend’.

Click on this drop-down menu and select ‘Multiply’. This will change the blending mode of your layer and will create a vignette effect.

Adjust the Opacity

Finally, you will need to adjust the opacity of your layer. To do this, go to the ‘Layer’ menu and select ‘Layer Properties’.

In the ‘Layer Properties’ dialogue box, you will see a slider next to the word ‘Opacity’. Use this slider to adjust the opacity of your layer until you are happy with the effect.

And that’s it! You have now successfully created a vignette effect in Affinity Photo.
