Overview
The Keychain Access app in Mac OS Mojave is a handy utility that can help you keep your passwords and other sensitive information secure. With this app, you can create and manage different keychains, as well as add and remove items from them. Additionally, you can use the Keychain Access app to change the password for your current keychain, or create a new keychain altogether. In this article, we’ll show you how to use the Keychain Access app to its full potential.
Creating a New Keychain
To create a new keychain, launch the Keychain Access app and select the “File” menu. From the drop-down menu, select “New Keychain.” In the next window, you’ll need to provide a name and password for your new keychain. Once you’ve done so, click “Create.”
Adding Items to a Keychain
To add items to a keychain, launch the Keychain Access app and select the “Edit” menu. From the drop-down menu, select “Add Item.” In the next window, you’ll need to provide a name and password for the item you’re adding. Once you’ve done so, click “Add.”
Removing Items from a Keychain
To remove items from a keychain, launch the Keychain Access app and select the “Edit” menu. From the drop-down menu, select “Delete.” In the next window, select the item or items you want to remove and click “Delete.”
Changing the Password for a Keychain
To change the password for a keychain, launch the Keychain Access app and select the “Edit” menu. From the drop-down menu, select “Change Password.” In the next window, you’ll need to provide the old password for the keychain, as well as the new password you want to use. Once you’ve done so, click “Change Password.”
Assuming that you have already opened the Keychain Access app, you will be presented with a list of keychains on the left side of the window. The “login” keychain is automatically unlocked when you log in to your Mac, while the “System” keychain is unlocked when you restart your Mac. To unlock a keychain, simply double-click it. If you want to lock a keychain, select it and click the lock icon at the top of the window.
If you need to access a password that is stored in a keychain, double-click the keychain to open it, then double-click the item that you want to view. This will open a new window that will display the password. If you want to view the password in plain text, click the “Show password” checkbox.
If you need to add a new password to a keychain, select the keychain that you want to add the password to, then click the “Add Item” button at the top of the window. This will open a new window where you can enter the password. Be sure to select the “Kind” as “Internet password”. Once you have entered the password, click the “Add” button to save it to the keychain.
If you need to change a password that is already stored in a keychain, double-click the keychain to open it, then double-click the item that you want to change. This will open a new window that will display the password. Make the necessary changes to the password, then click the “Save Changes” button.
If you need to delete a password from a keychain, select the keychain that you want to delete the password from, then click the “Delete Item” button at the top of the window. This will open a new window where you can confirm the deletion.
The Keychain Access App is located in the Utilities folder.
To open the app, click on the Launchpad icon in the Dock and then type “Keychain” into the search bar. Click on the Keychain Access app icon.
In the Keychain Access app, you will see a list of all the keychains on your Mac. The “login” keychain is the default keychain and is where your Mac stores all your passwords.
To view the passwords in a keychain, double-click on the keychain’s name. Enter your Mac’s password when prompted and then click on the “Allow” button.
In the Keychain Access app, you can also add new passwords and secure notes. To add a new password, click on the “File” menu and then select “New Password Item”. Enter a name for the password and then click on the “Attributes” button.
In the “Attributes” window, enter the account name, password, and URL for the password. You can also select a security level for the password. The higher the security level, the more difficult it will be for someone to guess your password.
When you are finished, click on the “Add” button. The new password will now be saved in your keychain.
To add a new secure note, click on the “File” menu and then select “New Secure Note Item”. Enter a name for the note and then click on the “Security” button.
In the “Security” window, enter the account name, password, and URL for the note. You can also select a security level for the note. The higher the security level, the more difficult it will be for someone to guess your password.
When you are finished, click on the “Add” button. The new secure note will now be saved in your keychain.
If you’re using iCloud Keychain, your passwords will be updated across all of your approved devices that are signed in to iCloud with the same Apple ID.
To add, change, or delete a password:
Open the Keychain Access app by pressing Command + Space to open Spotlight and typing Keychain Access.
In the Keychain Access app, select Passwords from the left sidebar.
To add a new password, click the Add button in the toolbar.
To change a password, double-click the item you want to update.
To delete a password, select the item and press the Delete key.
