Posted on 17th June 2023
The File Sharing feature in Mac OS Mojave is a great way to share files between Macs on the same network. You can use it to share files with other Mac users, or even with Windows users. Here’s how to set it up and use it.
Setting Up File Sharing
To set up file sharing, open the Sharing preferences pane in System Preferences. Click the checkbox next to File Sharing to enable it. You’ll see a list of the users on your network who can access your shared files. To add a user, click the + button and enter the user’s name and password. To remove a user, select the user and click the – button. You can also set up file sharing for specific folders by clicking the + button and selecting the folder you want to share. By default, all users have read-only access to shared folders. To give a user read/write access, select the user and click the “Read & Write” button.
Using File Sharing
Once you’ve set up file sharing, you can access your shared files by connecting to your Mac from another Mac or Windows computer. To connect from a Mac, open the Finder and select “Connect to Server” from the Go menu. Enter the address of your Mac in the “Server Address” field. To connect from a Windows computer, open the “Network” folder in File Explorer and double-click your Mac’s icon. You’ll be prompted to enter a username and password. Once you’re connected, you’ll see a list of the shared folders on your Mac. Double-click a folder to open it. You can now copy files to and from the shared folder.
Sharing With Windows Users
If you want to share files with Windows users, you’ll need to enable the SMB (Server Message Block) protocol. To do this, open the Sharing preferences pane and click the Options button next to File Sharing. Select the checkbox next to “Share files and folders using SMB.” You’ll now be able to access your shared files from Windows computers using the same method as described above. Windows users will only be able to access files in shared folders that have read/write access. If you want to give a Windows user read/write access to a shared folder, you’ll need to add them as a user in the Users & Groups preferences pane.
Assuming that you have already set up screen sharing on your Mac, you can now use the file sharing feature. This is a great way to share files between Macs, as well as between a Mac and a PC. Here’s how to use it:
1. On your Mac, open the Finder.
2. Click on the Go menu, then select Connect to Server.
3. In the Server Address field, enter the IP address of the other Mac.
4. Click on the Connect button.
5. Enter the username and password of the other Mac when prompted.
6. Once you’re connected, you’ll see the other Mac’s shared folders in the Finder window.
7. To copy a file from the other Mac to your Mac, simply drag and drop it into the desired location on your Mac.
8. To copy a file from your Mac to the other Mac, drag and drop it into the desired location on the other Mac.
You can also use the file sharing feature to share files between a Mac and a PC. To do this, you’ll need to set up file sharing on the PC first. Once you’ve done that, follow the steps above, but use the IP address of the PC in the Server Address field instead.
