Configuring Active Directory Domain Services Sites and Services in Server 2022

Posted on 17th June 2023

Introduction

Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) is a server role in Server 2022 that enables an administrator to create, manage, and maintain an Active Directory domain. An AD DS domain is a collection of network resources (such as computers, users, and printers) that can be managed together. AD DS uses a centralized database to store information about all the objects in the domain.

A domain controller is a server that stores a copy of the AD DS database and provides directory services to users and computers in the domain. Domain controllers are also responsible for replicating the AD DS database to other domain controllers in the domain.

Sites and services is a feature in Server 2022 that allows an administrator to manage Active Directory replication. Replication is the process by which changes made to the AD DS database are copied from one domain controller to another. Replication is necessary to ensure that all domain controllers in the domain have the same data.

The sites and services feature allows an administrator to control which domain controllers replicate with each other. This can be useful in a large domain where there are multiple domain controllers located in different parts of the world. By controlling replication, an administrator can minimize the amount of network traffic that is generated by replication.

Configuring Sites and Services

To configure sites and services, open the Server Manager console and select the Tools menu. From the Tools menu, select the Active Directory Sites and Services option.

In the Active Directory Sites and Services console, expand the Sites container. Under the Sites container, you will see a list of the sites that have been created in the domain. If no sites have been created, you will only see the Default-First-Site-Name site.

To create a new site, right-click on the Sites container and select the New Site option from the menu. This will open the New Site dialog box.

In the New Site dialog box, enter a name for the new site and select a site link. A site link is a connection between two sites. Site links are used to control replication between sites. Selecting a site link will cause the site link to be displayed in the site link list.

Once you have entered a name for the new site and selected a site link, click the OK button to create the new site.

Creating Sites

Once you have created a site, you will need to create at least one domain controller in the site. To create a domain controller in a site, right-click on the site and select the New Domain Controller option from the menu. This will open the New Domain Controller dialog box.

In the New Domain Controller dialog box, select the Add a domain controller to an existing domain option and click the Next button. On the next page of the wizard, enter the name of the domain that you want to add the domain controller to. Click the Next button to continue.

On the next page of the wizard, you will be prompted to enter the credentials of a user who has privileges to add a domain controller to the domain. Enter the credentials of a user who has these privileges and click the Next button to continue.

On the next page of the wizard, you will be prompted to select the site in which you want to install the domain controller. Select the site in which you want to install the domain controller and click the Next button to continue.

On the next page of the wizard, you will be prompted to select the domain controller options. Select the options that you want and click the Next button to continue.

On the next page of the wizard, you will be prompted to select the DNS server options. Select the options that you want and click the Next button to continue.

On the next page of the wizard, you will be prompted to select the database and log file locations. Select the locations that you want and click the Next button to continue.

On the next page of the wizard, you will be prompted to review your selections. Review your selections and click the Install button to install the domain controller.

Configuring Active Directory Domain Services Sites and Services in Server 2022

Introduction

Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) is the central component of the Microsoft Windows Server 2022 identity infrastructure. By using AD DS, you can manage users, computers, and other devices in your environment by using a centralized database. AD DS also provides the ability to deploy group policy objects (GPOs) to your environment.

In order to manage AD DS and GPOs in your environment, you need to configure Active Directory Sites and Services. Active Directory Sites and Services is a Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in that you can use to manage the replication of directory data among Active Directory servers.

Prerequisites

Before you begin, you need to have the following:

  • A server running Microsoft Windows Server 2022 with Active Directory Domain Services installed.
  • Administrative credentials for the server on which you will be configuring Active Directory Sites and Services.

Configuring Active Directory Sites and Services

To configure Active Directory Sites and Services, follow these steps:

  1. Log in to the server on which you will be configuring Active Directory Sites and Services. Open the Server Manager console.
  2. In the left pane, click on Tools and then select Active Directory Sites and Services from the drop-down menu.
  3. In the right pane, right-click on Active Directory Sites and Services and then select Properties from the context menu.
  4. In the Active Directory Sites and Services Properties dialog box, on the General tab, in the Site name field, type the name of the site in which you want to manage Active Directory.
  5. In the Description field, type a description for the site.
  6. Click OK to close the Active Directory Sites and Services Properties dialog box.
