How to Create and Edit Gradients in Affinity Designer

Posted on 17th June 2023

Creating a New Gradient

To create a new gradient, select the Gradient tool from the toolbar or press G on your keyboard. Then, click and drag on the canvas to create a gradient. By default, the gradient will be a linear gradient, but you can change the type of gradient by clicking on the Type dropdown in the Gradient panel.

Editing Gradients

To edit an existing gradient, select the Gradient tool and click on the gradient you want to edit. Then, you can use the Gradient panel to change the type, colors, and other properties of the gradient.

Types of Gradients

There are three types of gradients in Affinity Designer: linear, radial, and angular. Each type of gradient has its own set of properties that you can adjust.

Linear Gradients

Linear gradients are the most basic type of gradient. To create a linear gradient, click and drag on the canvas with the Gradient tool. By default, the gradient will be a linear gradient, but you can change the type of gradient by clicking on the Type dropdown in the Gradient panel.

You can adjust the following properties of linear gradients:

  • Start – the starting point of the gradient
  • End – the ending point of the gradient
  • Angle – the angle of the gradient
  • Scale – the size of the gradient

Radial Gradients

Radial gradients are created by clicking and dragging on the canvas with the Gradient tool. To change the type of gradient, click on the Type dropdown in the Gradient panel and select Radial. Radial gradients are useful for creating gradients that emanate from a central point.

You can adjust the following properties of radial gradients:

  • Center – the center point of the gradient
  • Radius – the size of the gradient
  • Scale – the size of the gradient

Angular Gradients

Angular gradients are created by clicking and dragging on the canvas with the Gradient tool. To change the type of gradient, click on the Type dropdown in the Gradient panel and select Angular. Angular gradients are useful for creating gradients that have a more organic, natural feel.

You can adjust the following properties of angular gradients:

  • Center – the center point of the gradient
  • Angle – the angle of the gradient
  • Scale – the size of the gradient

When you’re happy with your gradient, save it as a Preset so that you can quickly access and apply it to other objects in your document. To do this, go to the Presets panel (Window > Presets) and click the ‘+’ icon.

Next, give your Preset a name and click ‘OK’. Your Preset will now appear in the Presets panel for easy access.

If you need to make further edits to a Preset, simply double-click on it in the Presets panel to open the Gradient Editor.

Affinity Designer also offers a handy feature called the ‘Gradient Tool’, which allows you to quickly and easily apply a gradient to any object in your document.

To use the Gradient Tool, select it from the Tools panel (or press ‘G’ on your keyboard). Then, click and drag on your object to apply the gradient.

You can also use the Gradient Tool to edit an existing gradient. Simply click on the gradient in your document to select it, then click and drag on the gradient ‘handles’ to make your changes.

That’s all there is to know about creating and editing gradients in Affinity Designer! With a little practice, you’ll be creating beautiful, eye-catching gradients in no time.

In this section, we’ll look at how you can create and edit gradients in Affinity Designer.

There are two ways to create gradients in Affinity Designer: either by using the Gradient Tool, or by creating a gradient fill layer.

If you want to create a gradient fill layer, simply click on the “Create New Layer” icon in the Layers Panel and choose “Gradient Fill Layer” from the menu.

Once you’ve created your gradient fill layer, you can then edit the gradient using the Gradient Editor. To open the Gradient Editor, simply double-click on the gradient fill layer in the Layers Panel.

The Gradient Editor allows you to change the colors of the gradient, as well as the gradient’s opacity, blend mode, and other settings.

To change the colors of the gradient, simply click on one of the color stops in the gradient preview and then choose a new color from the Color Picker.

To add a new color stop to the gradient, click on the “Add Color Stop” button in the Gradient Editor.

To delete a color stop from the gradient, click on the “Delete Color Stop” button in the Gradient Editor.

Once you’ve made your changes, click on the “OK” button to close the Gradient Editor.

If you want to create a gradient using the Gradient Tool, simply select the Gradient Tool from the Tools Panel.

Then, click and drag in the document window to create your gradient.

You can also use the Gradient Tool to edit an existing gradient. To do this, simply click on the gradient you want to edit and then make your changes in the Gradient Editor.

Once you’ve made your changes, click on the “OK” button to close the Gradient Editor.

In Affinity Designer, you can create gradients in a few different ways. One way is to use the Gradient Tool, which allows you to create a gradient by clicking and dragging on the canvas. Another way is to use the Gradient Editor, which gives you more control over the gradient.

To create a gradient with the Gradient Tool, select the tool from the toolbar. Then, click and drag on the canvas to create the gradient. To change the direction of the gradient, click and drag in the opposite direction.

To edit a gradient, double-click on the gradient in the palette. This will open the Gradient Editor. In the Gradient Editor, you can change the colors of the gradient, the direction of the gradient, and the type of gradient.

To add a new color to the gradient, click on the “Add Color” button. This will add a new color stop to the gradient. To remove a color from the gradient, click on the “Remove Color” button.

To change the direction of the gradient, click on the “Reverse” button. This will reverse the direction of the gradient.

To change the type of gradient, click on the “Type” drop-down menu and select the desired gradient type. There are four gradient types: Linear, Radial, Diamond, and Conical.
