Posted on 16th June 2023
What is Handoff?
Handoff is a feature in Apple’s Continuity that lets you start an activity on one device and then pick it up on another. For example, you can start writing an email on your iPhone and then finish it on your iPad. Or start browsing a website on your Mac and then pick up where you left off on your iPhone. You can even start a document on your Mac and then finish it on your iPad. Handoff is available on all devices that support Continuity, including the iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Mac.
How to Set Up Handoff
To use Handoff, you need to have iCloud and Bluetooth turned on. On your iPhone, open the Settings app and tap on iCloud. On your iPad, open the Settings app and tap on iCloud. On your iPod touch, open the Settings app and tap on iCloud. On your Mac, open System Preferences and click on iCloud. Make sure that the iCloud Drive and Handoff options are turned on.

Assuming you have all of the prerequisite hardware, here’s how to set up and use Handoff in MacOS Mojave.
First, make sure that both your Mac and your iOS device are signed in to iCloud with the same Apple ID. On your Mac, open System Preferences, then click on iCloud. On your iOS device, go to Settings > iCloud.
Next, enable Handoff on your Mac. On your Mac, open System Preferences, then click on General. Under the “Allow Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices” heading, make sure the box is checked.
On your iOS device, go to Settings > General > Handoff. Make sure the switch next to Handoff is in the ON position.
Now you’re ready to start using Handoff. Let’s say you’re browsing the web on your iPhone and you come across a website you want to continue viewing on your Mac. Just swipe up from the bottom of the screen to bring up the Control Center, then tap on the Handoff icon.
Your Mac will automatically open the Safari browser and take you to the website you were viewing on your iPhone.
If you’re working on a document in the Pages app on your iPad, you can easily continue editing it on your Mac. Just tap on the Share icon in the Pages app, then select “Handoff”.
Your Mac will automatically open the Pages app and take you to the document you were working on.
You can also use Handoff to continue working on an email you started writing on your iPhone. Just tap on the Share icon in the Mail app, then select “Handoff”.
Your Mac will automatically open the Mail app and take you to the email you were writing.
Finally, you can use Handoff to continue a conversation you started in the Messages app on your iPhone. Just tap on the Share icon in the Messages app, then select “Handoff”.
Your Mac will automatically open the Messages app and take you to the conversation you were having.
In order to use Handoff, your Mac and iOS devices must be running the correct software. On your Mac, you’ll need to be running at least OS X Yosemite 10.10.3, while on your iOS devices, you’ll need to be running iOS 8.1 or later. Handoff is compatible with the following Mac models:
– MacBook (Late 2009 or newer)
– MacBook Pro (Mid 2010 or newer)
– MacBook Air (Late 2010 or newer)
– Mac mini (Mid 2010 or newer)
– iMac (Late 2009 or newer)
– Mac Pro (Mid 2010 or newer)
Once you’ve verified that your devices are compatible, you’ll need to make sure that they’re signed in to the same iCloud account and that they’re connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Once you’ve done that, you should see the Handoff icon in the Dock on your Mac.
To use Handoff, simply open the app on your iOS device that you want to continue using on your Mac and look for the Handoff icon in the Dock. Once you see the icon, simply click on it and the app will open on your Mac. You can also use the keyboard shortcut Command + Option + H to open the Handoff app on your Mac.
If you don’t see the Handoff icon in the Dock, you can enable it by going to the System Preferences on your Mac and clicking on the “General” tab. From there, you should see the “Allow Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices” option. Make sure that this option is checked and you should see the Handoff icon appear in the Dock.
