How to Use the Crop Tool in Affinity Designer

The Crop tool is a handy way to remove unwanted parts of an image. It’s very simple to use and only requires a few clicks.

How to Use the Crop Tool in Affinity Designer

  1. Open the image you want to crop in Affinity Designer.
  2. Click on the Crop tool in the Tools palette (it’s the second tool from the top).
  3. Click and drag on the image to create a cropping rectangle.
  4. Click the checkmark in the Options bar to confirm the crop, or press Enter/Return.

Tips

  • To cancel the crop, click the Cancel button in the Options bar, or press Esc.
  • To crop to a specific aspect ratio, enter the ratio in the W and H fields in the Options bar.
  • To constrain the crop rectangle to a square, hold down the Shift key while dragging.
  • To move the crop rectangle while you’re dragging it, hold down the Spacebar.

Cropping an Image

Let’s say you have the following image and you want to crop it so that only the coffee cup is visible:

First, select the Crop tool from the Tools palette:

Next, click and drag on the image to create a cropping rectangle. As you drag, you’ll see a preview of the cropped image:

When you’re happy with the crop, click the checkmark in the Options bar, or press Enter/Return. The cropped image will be saved as a new file.

Cropping to a Specific Aspect Ratio

You can crop to a specific aspect ratio by entering the ratio in the W and H fields in the Options bar. For example, to crop to a 3:2 aspect ratio, enter 3 in the W field and 2 in the H field.

As you drag the crop rectangle, you’ll see the width and height values in the Options bar change. When the width and height values match the aspect ratio you entered, the crop rectangle will turn green:

You can also enter values in the W and H fields to constrain the crop rectangle to a specific size. For example, to make a square crop, enter the same value in both fields.

Cropping an Image to a Square

To crop an image to a square, select the Crop tool and enter the same value in the W and H fields in the Options bar. Then, click and drag on the image to create a crop rectangle. As you drag, you’ll see the width and height values in the Options bar change. When the width and height values are the same, the crop rectangle will turn green:

When you’re happy with the crop, click the checkmark in the Options bar, or press Enter/Return. The cropped image will be saved as a new file.

Moving the Crop Rectangle

If you need to move the crop rectangle after you’ve already placed it, hold down the Spacebar and click inside the rectangle. Then, drag to move the rectangle.

Canceling the Crop

To cancel the crop, click the Cancel button in the Options bar, or press Esc.
