FileVault is a disk encryption program built into Mac OS Mojave. When you turn on FileVault, your Mac will use the FileVault drive encryption to encrypt the contents of your drive. This will protect your data in the event that your Mac is lost or stolen.
To turn on FileVault, open the System Preferences application and click on the Security & Privacy icon. Click on the FileVault tab. You will be prompted to enter your password. Enter your password and click on the Turn On FileVault button. Your Mac will now begin encrypting your drive.
Once your drive has been encrypted, you will need to enter your password every time you log into your Mac. You can also set a recovery key, which will allow you to unlock your drive if you forget your password.

If you have Mac OS Mojave, you can use FileVault to encrypt the contents of your entire startup disk. When you turn on FileVault, your Mac does the following:
1. Creates a FileVault recovery key and stores it with Apple.
2. Creates an encrypted volume on your startup disk.
3. Restarts your Mac and logs you in automatically to the encrypted volume.
Your Mac always encrypts and decrypts the contents of your startup disk, so you might not notice any difference in performance. FileVault requires that you log in with your account password. If you forget your password, you can use the FileVault recovery key to log in.
To turn on FileVault, you need to have a user account that can log in to the Mac. If you don’t have a user account, you can create one.
1. Open System Preferences, then click Security & Privacy.
2. Click the FileVault tab.
3. If you’re prompted to unlock the Preferences pane, click the lock icon in the lower-left corner and enter your password.
4. Click Turn On FileVault.
5. A message appears, asking you to choose how you want to unlock your disk and reset your password if you forget it.
6. If you have more than one user account on your Mac, you might see a message that says you need to log in as an administrator.
7. Enter the administrator username and password that you use to log in to your Mac.
8. Click Turn On FileVault.
9. A message appears, telling you that you can use your iCloud account to unlock your disk and reset your password.
10. If you have an iCloud account, you can click Use iCloud.
11. If you don’t have an iCloud account, you can click Create a Recovery Key.
12. Follow the instructions on the screen.
13. Click Done.
Your Mac restarts and begins encrypting your startup disk.
You can check the progress of the encryption by opening System Preferences and clicking the FileVault tab. The FileVault status shows how much progress has been made and when the process will be finished.
If you need to stop the encryption process, you can click the Stop Using FileVault button in the FileVault pane of System Preferences.
If you change your mind and want to turn off FileVault, you can click the Turn Off FileVault button in the FileVault pane of System Preferences.
If you forget your password, you can use the FileVault recovery key to log in. The recovery key is a long string of letters and numbers. If you don’t have the recovery key, you won’t be able to log in to your Mac or access any of the data on your startup disk.
If you have an iCloud account, you can use it to unlock your disk and reset your password.
To use your iCloud account to unlock your disk and reset your password:
1. Restart your Mac and hold down the Option key until the Startup Manager window appears.
2. Select your startup disk, then click the arrow under its icon.
3. Enter your iCloud username and password.
4. Click Unlock.
5. Follow the instructions on the screen.
If you don’t have an iCloud account, you can use the FileVault recovery key to log in. The recovery key is a long string of letters and numbers. If you don’t have the recovery key, you won’t be able to log in to your Mac or access any of the data on your startup disk.

5. Your Mac’s Recovery Keychain
If you still can’t find your FileVault recovery key, you won’t be able to log in to your Mac or access any of the data on your startup disk.
