How to Use the VoiceOver Feature in Mac OS Mojave
The VoiceOver feature in Mac OS Mojave is an amazing accessibility tool that can be used by those who are blind or have low vision. With VoiceOver, you can hear a description of what is happening on your screen, as well as control your Mac using only your voice. In this article, we’ll show you how to get started with VoiceOver and how to use some of its most important features.
Before you can use VoiceOver, you’ll need to enable it in the Accessibility pane of System Preferences. To do this, open System Preferences and click on the “Accessibility” icon.
Scroll down to the “Vision” section and click on the “VoiceOver” checkbox. Once VoiceOver is enabled, you’ll notice that a new VoiceOver Utility window appears. This utility allows you to customize various VoiceOver settings.
One of the first things you’ll want to do is set a keyboard shortcut for activating VoiceOver. This will make it easier to turn VoiceOver on and off as needed. To do this, open the VoiceOver Utility and click on the “Keyboard” tab.
Under the “VoiceOver Keyboard Shortcuts” section, click on the “Set Key” button. A new window will appear. Press the keys you want to use for the VoiceOver shortcut and then click on the “Ok” button.
Now that VoiceOver is enabled and you have a keyboard shortcut set up, let’s take a look at how to use some of its features.
When you turn on VoiceOver, you’ll notice that a new voice speaks everything that happens on your screen. This voice is called the “VoiceOver cursor.” You can move the VoiceOver cursor around your screen by hovering your mouse over the area you want to focus on.
You can also use the arrow keys on your keyboard to move the VoiceOver cursor. As you move the VoiceOver cursor around your screen, you’ll hear a description of what is under the cursor.
To hear a more detailed description of an item, you can press the “VO” key (often labeled “Fn”) and the up arrow key. This is called the “Rotor.” The Rotor allows you to choose what type of information you want to hear about the item under the VoiceOver cursor.
For example, you can use the Rotor to hear the name of the item, its role, or its position on the screen. To move the Rotor, press the “VO” key and the left or right arrow key.
If you want to hear a description of the entire screen, you can press the “VO” key and the “A” key. This is called the “Screen Curtain.” The Screen Curtain will turn off your display so that others can’t see it.
You can still use your Mac while the Screen Curtain is enabled. To turn off the Screen Curtain, press the “VO” key and the “A” key again.
If you want to hear a description of an item without moving the VoiceOver cursor, you can press the “VO” key and the “Space bar.” This is called the “Item Chooser.”
The Item Chooser will give you a list of items on the screen. You can use the arrow keys to move through the list and hear a description of each item. When you find the item you want to focus on, press the “Enter” key.
VoiceOver also allows you to control your Mac using only your voice. To do this, you’ll need to enable the “Speak Commands” feature in the VoiceOver Utility.
To do this, open the VoiceOver Utility and click on the “Commands” tab. Under the “Speak Commands” section, click on the “Enable” checkbox.
Now, you can use your voice to issue commands to your Mac. For example, you can say “Click Button,” “Press Tab Key,” or “Show Finder.”
You can also use your voice to type. To do this, enable the “Speak Characters” and “Speak Words” features in the VoiceOver Utility.
Now, you can say things like “Type Hello,” “Type World,” or “Type MacRumors.com.”
