With digital photography, the double exposure effect is easy to create with software like Affinity Photo. In this article, we’ll show you how to create a double exposure effect in Affinity Photo.
What is a double exposure effect?
A double exposure effect is created by combining two images into a single image. The effect can be used to create a variety of different effects, from surrealistic to dreamlike.
Double exposure photography was originally created with film photography. To create the effect, a photographer would expose a frame of film twice, with different images. The two images would then be combined into a single image.
With digital photography, the double exposure effect is easy to create with software like Affinity Photo. In this article, we’ll show you how to create a double exposure effect in Affinity Photo.
How to create a double exposure effect in Affinity Photo
Step 1: Open the images in Affinity Photo
To create a double exposure effect, you’ll need two images. Open the two images in Affinity Photo.
Step 2: Add the first image to the stack
In the Layers panel, click the “Add to Stack” button.
Step 3: Add the second image to the stack
In the Layers panel, click the “Add to Stack” button.
Step 4: Select the “Blend Mode”
In the Layers panel, select the “Blend Mode” option.
Step 5: Select the “Multiply” blend mode
In the “Blend Mode” drop-down menu, select the “Multiply” blend mode.
Step 6: Adjust the opacity
In the Layers panel, adjust the opacity of the top layer until you’re happy with the result.
And that’s it! You’ve successfully created a double exposure effect in Affinity Photo.
Double Exposure Effect
In this tutorial, we’ll create a double exposure effect in Affinity Photo. This effect can be used to create some really interesting results, and it’s surprisingly easy to do!
To create a double exposure effect, we’ll need two images. The first image will be our base image, and the second image will be our overlay image. For this tutorial, I’m using a photo of a tree as my base image, and a photo of the night sky as my overlay image.
First, open your base image in Affinity Photo. Then, open your overlay image in a new layer. To do this, go to File > Open, and select your overlay image.
Next, we need to change the Blend Mode of the overlay layer. The Blend Mode controls how the two layers are blended together, and there are a lot of different options to choose from. For this effect, we want to use the Screen Blend Mode. To do this, simply click on the word “Normal” next to the Blend Mode option in the Layers Panel, and select “Screen” from the list.
Now, you should see the night sky start to show through the tree. If it’s too dark, you can adjust the Opacity of the layer to let more of the base image show through.
And that’s it! You’ve successfully created a double exposure effect. Experiment with different images and different Blend Modes to see what kinds of results you can get.

Double Exposure Effect
The first thing we need to do is open up the two images that we want to use for our double exposure effect.
For this tutorial, I’m going to use a photo of a cityscape, and a photo of a tree.
Once we have our images open, we need to drag one of them into the other to create a new layer.
In my case, I’m going to drag the cityscape photo into the tree photo.
You’ll notice that the cityscape photo is now on top of the tree photo.
We need to change the blend mode of this layer to “Lighten”.
You can do this by clicking on the “Blend Mode” drop-down menu in the “Layers” panel.
Now, you’ll see that the cityscape photo is starting to show through the tree photo.
If we want, we can adjust the opacity of this layer to control how much of the cityscape photo is showing through.
In my case, I’m going to set the opacity to 50%.
Now, let’s add a third image to create even more interesting results.
For this image, I’m going to use a photo of some clouds.
Again, we need to drag this image into our project, and place it on a new layer.
This time, we’re going to set the blend mode to “Screen”.
And, we’re also going to set the opacity to 50%.
Now, you can see that the clouds are starting to show through the other two images.
If we want, we can add even more images to create an even more surreal effect.
Here, I’ve added a fourth image, a photo of a sunset.
I’ve placed this image on a new layer, and set the blend mode to “Lighten”.
And, I’ve also lowered the opacity to 40%.
As you can see, the more images you add, the more interesting and surreal the results can be.
So, experiment with different images, and different blend modes to see what you can come up with.
When you’re happy with the results, simply flatten the image, and save it as a new file.
And that’s how you can create a double exposure effect in Affinity Photo.
Create a New Document
To get started, you’ll need to create a new document in Affinity Photo. The easiest way to do this is to go to File > New… in the top menu bar.
